Doomben 26/05 Midweek Preview

We are back in the big end of town! The third meeting in 10 days for the illustrious Doomben Racetrack! Today however we substitute the Group 1 Greatness for Maiden Mayhem. The track should read a Good 4 and with the rail out 5 metres, you SHOULD be able to come from anyway (jks rail, on pace all day)

We kick off in Race 1 with David Van-Doomben bringing the well bred Jakkalberry Finn to town! Being by Jakkalberry, this fella will be looking for further through his prep and goes around at poison odds! But what else beats him on paper? The locals have to be respected here but it's very much a 'see it win before we bet proposition' for the Mugs.

Me: Siri, how to enable PTPD (Post Traumatic Punting Disorder)

Siri: Now playing Kipoche replays

The Gollan guzzler lines up in Race 2 over the 1350m and gets the booking of young gun KWT. Kermakaya could bring them across here to lead and Charm Bracelet has been racing well without winning, including a last start 4th behind Princess Tenko (2nd) who's since franked that form. Again, we need to hit some solid form before Derby Day so it's another race we'll be smoking it. Control the launch Mugs.

It's time to unleash the shoulders here, the market has narrowed it down to 2 runners and the Mugs find it hard to argue. The Sherpa was solid on debut, holding a forward position only to be found out late first up, Warrior Hero brings some very solid form lines through Tiger Heart and from the soft draw looks to do no work in the run. Both these horses are here for some black type races, Warrior Hero looks to have the fitness edge here on his rivals and should be hard to hold out, for that reason he goes on top.

Well, we can't talk Wednesday guzzlers and not included the Fogden trained Neutron! 1 win from his 8 starts the 3YO son of Starcraft has been rolled as favourite four times and goes around at the poisions here. One that looks to be a bit of value is the Morrisey trained Menindee. KWTerrific takes the ride and should have enough early speed to compensate for the wider draw, 2 starts ago was 2.5L off a smart one in Setanta (Gollan stable) who would go around at 1.20 in a field like this, lightly raced with not a lot of depth in the field he's an each way all day kind of play.

There's a thing in racing called picking your spots to take a toilet break and that's what we have here in Race 5 over the 2020m for the BM68er's. City Smart used to show a bit of potential but hasn't done a lot in a couple of preps, Brocson is closer to bringing up the 100th start than another win, go look at the form for Saturday.

Race 6 over the 1200 is a Class 3 with set weights and the Mugs have to break their own rule NOT BACKING APPRENTICES, because it's an apprentice race. Damn.

There's one here that looks to get in nicely for leading apprentice J Hux, he takes up the ride on Scathing here for the airborne Munce stable and looks incredibly well suited for a first up assignment. This time last year Scathing was a light weight chance of sneaking in to the Stradbroke field and if he can land on speed he'll be hard to chase down. McCovey Cove has always shown a bit of 'above average ability' but first up after 230 days I'd like to see what animal has returned to the racetrack.

Race 7 over the mile gets trickier every time I look at the form, you've got the Chris Waller 'What will we do this week' placement of Prospectus who goes 1400 to 1800 back to 1600, Wowsers hasn't been able to strike that winning blow for our main man Wiggo and don't forget Roasted and Grand Zou who just haven't been able to capture their best form, it's that kind of race so let's sit back, watch the roughies bolt in and pat ourselves on the back because we left it alone.

It's the get out stakes and that's exactly what we'll be doing here. Hard Labour comes through an absolutely quality field last start, although it reads Class 6 on paper this was stacked with Fender and Garabaldi who contested at Group level last start, although this daughter of All Too Hard isn't at that level she certainly will be hard to beat back to Handicap conditions. Robbie Fradd should be able to settle midfield with Shijin looking to be the early speed. Really Discreet was disappointing first up but will take the benefit from that run, the problem is from the wide draw is getting across and settling, this could be a handy form race going forward but the Edmonds camp have a good one here.
