Doomben | August 10

MEKKA race day, yes that is correct, where the rums, vodka cruisers, UDL’s and tequila sunrises will be the drinks of choice for the younger crowd that don the track today. The quality of the card reflects perhaps the interest of the annual attendees that make this race day more of a party than about the horses, but alas we will try to break it down for them to find a few winners. By some miracle, Doomben has come up a Good 4 and the rail is out 9.5 metres. Racing gets underway at 1.08pm AEST.

Race 1: MAIDEN (1650M)

Pretty interesting race here with Maple Door going around again, but he is certainly starting to become costly. Yangari is the other noted runner here who has had a similar sort of prep getting close each time but seemingly cannot get it done. I have however landed on top with Gadidae from the Billy Healey stable.

Race 2: MAIDEN (1200M)

Going a bit rough in the second with Rosato for the Waller stable. From barrier 7, she should be able to sit just off what should be a pretty good tempo with pace from Yes to Excess, Hearsay and O’calloghan. The booking of James Orman has pricked the ears here and just looks like the gear change this horse needs to get the victory. The good surface for the first time could also assist, and at this price it is worth a play in what is an open race.

Race 3: MAIDEN (1200M)

Another almost impossible race to assess with a lot of first starters lining up here. Siding with This is One from the Kemp yard with Tegan Harrison aboard. Was a great run on debut at Toowoomba and then in behind All that Pizzazz who is $21 in futures markets for the Golden Rose. Off the back of that 7th in probably the worst part of the track I am happy to forgive and take again here at a nice price with race experience on the board.

Race 4: Class 4 (1350M)

Pretty simple if Field Wiri cannot win this with 52.5 kilos on her back she’s off to the sea.

Race 5: MAIDEN (1350M)

Well this is definitely a race for the sickos out there with Landsborough Lad coming up $2.70 favourite again. There is just no way we can go again at that price - absolute rock bottom odds. Going with Dutch Gold from the outside barrier. With form around Savagal, Tarex and Dembe, he looks a pretty good bet here around the $6 quote. Will shoot forward from the gate and with Landsborough Lad not running out the 1200M last start, I cannot see him winning over 1350M and our boy will be camped off him ready to strike when his legs tire.

Race 6: Class 1 (2060M)

In the daily Chris Waller middle distance handicap we are happily siding with the Waller favourite in Otyrar. Jumps in the middle of the pack and with all the pace drawn inside this should setup very nicely for him. With a classy second first up to Podium who looks smart, the extra trip will suit and so will the dry surface.

Race 7: Benchmark 65 (1200M)

Finally we round out the day with perhaps the best race of the day in terms of quality and with the mare in form saying ringing true Saturday for Enterprise Mia, I think we can make it two from two with Vaccine. Stays at the 1200M which looks its pet trip and from barrier 6, Collett should be able to sit off Hatchet who is drawn outside her and when they turn into the straight, let down like last start and pip them again at the post.
