Doomben | June 1

Doomben made a comeback on Monday after the torrential rain we have had in Brisbane, and it was fair to say that the rail was hot! It has been shifted out 6.5 metres for today's card, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out. We are running on a Soft 6 track with the first race to jump at 11:26am AEST.

Race 1: MAIDEN (1050m)

Fair to say it is a pretty tough race to start the day, so this is a watch race here to just gauge the track. With a few of these runners only having had a few starts, it might be best to stay out. For the sickos out there, the Danny Bougoure runner Diamond Lass looks a nice bet with decent wet form and the go forward style of running.

Race 2: MAIDEN (1200m)

Well this race could be the start of a very good career and this is the career of Gulf of Venice. He comes to this off the back of four outstanding trials - winning 4 from 5. Two of those stellar trials were on a heavy track as well which bodes well for the bottomless Doomben we seem to regularly encounter.

Race 3: MAIDEN (1200m)

Absolute lottery here. A few first starters and to be honest not much exposed form. Happy to stay out.

Race 4: Benchmark 65 (2040m)

This is a pretty interesting field and has a nice race shape. Keen on last start winner here in Memoire Parfait. With the track a Soft 6 and wind still howling in Brisvegas, the track will probably keep drying and that will be the key with this bloke. It was a super last start effort on the synthetic and he likes to take up a forward position. Here’s hoping Steph has recovered from wedding celebrations and is ready to get him home at a bit of value.

Race 5: Class 5 (1640m)

In the fifth event of the day we use the rule we have here at the mugs, 'always back kiwi horses second up', and that is exactly what we will be doing here. Bentayga comes off a pretty average effort on the Sunshine Coast Polytrack, but that form is patchy at best. This horse goes well second up and one run under the belt, picks up the in-form KWT and laps up a soft track. A nice bet in a pretty even race outside the favourite.

Race 6: Class 2 (1350m)

We will hunt the value in this Class 2 and while the draw is definitely sticky, Heaven Amore’s form late last year its pretty good for this race. Had a similar trial last prep where she didn’t show her best then came out and ran a nice third behind Sir Warwick and as our good friend Lloydy says, Rocky form is the best form. Now the first few races this prep have not gone to plan but at the $20 quote, this is a bet each way all day with our main man Two Plus on board.

Race 7: Class 3 (1200m)

Surely Aidensfield can win this one. While she is coming back from two runs over 1400m, they were super runs in behind Bullfinch and Acquitted which looks superior formlines for this race. She has only missed twice over this trip and relishes all conditions. Wendy Peel jumps on and let me tell you she, will let her run and if she gets the breaks early, the $3 on offer is a spoil with those form lines.

Race 8: Class 3 (1200m)

This race is pretty open again. We have backed half the field over the years, with special mentions going to Bundyandcoke, Torun, Super Gorgeous and Whozyadeeler. Fair to say we will not be playing here.

Race 9: Benchmark 85 (1640m)

A really nice race to round out the card here today is this Benchmark 85. Fast Talking has come out last start and made a fool of me, Palaisipan is back to try and build another picket fence and Seleque is fresh off two on the bounce this campaign. I have sided here with Seleque. I was with her last start, but the meeting was abandoned, so back to the well we go. She should now be building to peak fitness for this trip after runs over 1350m and 1400m, while she handles all conditions and the lightning combination of Orman and Waller is a big tick.
