Doomben | June 12

Fire the fk up! It's Stradbroke Week! First, we've got nine races from glorious Doomben to get through. We're on a Good 4 and the rail is out 9m the entire. First race off just before midday.

Race 1: Fillies & Mares Maiden Plate (1110m)

The market says Maloney and Vandyke with first-starter Equine Art, but I'm staying out of this one with too many unknowns.

Race 2: Colts, Geldings & Enitres Maiden Plate (1110m)

The boys edition of the maiden doesn't fill me with too much joy either. In saying that, I've liked the trials of Chaboom enough to be with him on debut. Drawn the inside alley under Martin Harley, he will have fence in run and might be able to make Perigean wait for another day.

Race 3: 2YO Maiden Plate (1200m)

Matt Dunn's horses are always flying, so I'm happy to take the each way gamble about November Sun. She looked good winning a trial late last year and then had a real quiet time behind the older horses over 650m at Deagon. I imagine she's had another jump out in readiness for 1200m, which will be right up her alley. She will be coming late.

Race 4: Benchmark 65 (2060m)

Two nice horses line up here with Anemacore and Torovista, and it's the latter who piques my interest. He was a tough winner first-up over 1400m on a bottomless deck at Caloundra, before running gamely over 1600m at his next two, with his latest being in Highway company at Scone. Back to Brisbane, out to 2000m and set to get a cozy time on the speed, he should be too hard for the favourite to get past.

Race 5: 3YO Benchmark 65 (1200m)

Desert Koby is probably my favourite horse in CQ at the moment and I'm happy to coin him Master Jamie 2.0. Graeme Green has had a big opinion of this bloke all the way through, which has seen him win four of his six races. He will make his own luck on the speed, he should absorb pressure from Taltarni Fields and he can kick off the corner. The Doomben straight is a lot shorter than Rocky, and they struggle to catch him there!

Race 6: Class 1 Handicap (1650m)

He won like Winx on debut at this track but then let the punters down subsequently, going down at odds on in his next two starts. He resumed in the Gold Coast Guineas and went well, before having his colours lowered last start over 1350m as favourite again. He gets to the mile third-up, draws the inside alley and retains Jimmy Orman, so I expect him to bounce back today in an average race.

Race 7: Class 6 Handicap (1650m)

Poetic Drama should relish the drop in grade after contesting much tougher Saturday races. She went super in the Silk Stocking two back behind Thalassophile, and was then a bit plain last start behind Maracana at this track and trip. She should enjoy a good run behind the speed under Cejay Graham and will be right in the finish again back on top of the ground.

Race 8: Open Handicap (1350m)

I'm happy to forgive Punch Lane for his first-up defeat behind the in-form Midnight In Tokyo and Hold On Honey, who just controlled the race. He's unbeaten second-up and gets the services of Craig Williams, who has panels on most jockeys up here at the minute, which is no shock given his stellar career in Victoria. Punch Lane can get the right run today despite the awkward draw, and should bounce back to record win five at start ten.

Race 9: Benchmark 70 (1200m)

Bookending the day without a bet. This looks a pretty average, out of form bunch of horses. So I'm happy to watch.
