After a few days of wild weather up here in Queensland we shift to the Doomben mid-week card and with the rail out nine and half metres and soft to heavy conditions predicted its going to be a day of interesting results I dare say. But hold the phone, it's GROUP 1 THOUSAND GUINEAS DAY - so let's get the good stuff out of the way!
Caulfield Race 7 - Thousand Guineas 1600m
Moz - "QLD Form baby, All over Hinged here Mugs, from barrier 9 she should get a cart across and sit right off Queen of Dubai. She’s a QLDer so the good track will suit and D Lane should be in the box seat"
Lloydy - "The Godolphin filly, Heresy, has been a model of consistency in her five career starts, winning once and placing in the minor money on the other four occasions. In her last three starts, she has had very little luck which has seen her beaten by a total of only one length. A second to Gimmie Par and a third to Bruckner & Artorius reads very well in what is an average edition of the 1000 Guineas. She can box seat from the inside alley and be the strongest filly late under the roars of Damien Oliver."
Bean - "Hinged Should be able to cross this field with Cuban Link and the astute Waller stable don't bring them down South for a picnic. Will be leading or box seating and with even luck a similar run to the Flight Stakes she will be winning here, Damien Lane huge push having the premiership leader here is a great booking."
Ok, back to God's Country, yes it's Doomben, In the first you just have to be with Birriecart again here, was pretty impressive putting away Shajaea last start even with the weight swing in the favour of the former galloper in the small field the Birriecart should lead them off and with wet conditions and the rail out leading will be the place to be. There is not much of a price about him but with any improvement he should be making it two in a row here.
The second and third events both maidens over the 1050M in these wet conditions may unearth a future mud-lark but for me its just simply too hard. If you are playing I would be chasing on speed runners as its generally hard to make up ground in testing conditions unless you are a superior wet form horse.
There are great combinations like Toohey’s New and Winfield Blues and Four ‘n’ Twenty pie’s and tomato sauce but few combinations are as successful of late as Stephanie Thornton and the master TJ Gollan they are absolutely airborne. For that reason A River Somewhere is on top here. Will be leading or box seating in the run handles the conditions and last run at the Gold Coast was beaten for speed early so hoping that’s not the case here.
The fifth event is over the 1350M there looks a nice quinella if they can make ground out wide. Let’s Party Marty and Ruru both look to have some decent form for the conditions and from the map the former should be box seating behind Parko and Biggie with the latter looking for run on conditions late. Happy to have two bets here each way on both and the quinella.
Malibu Blaze is a very interesting runner in the sixth. She has been odds on a few runs this preparation and has disappointed at the price. Jim Byrne is back on and that was the recipe for the one win this prep so fingers crossed he has the magic again. No bet here as just looks too hard but keen to see how she goes for the Waller stable.
In the penultimate Kaiberry looks a bit of value here for the Laming yard. Last start winner at the Gold Coast which is a similar track to Doomben with a tighter winding circuit and gee whiz he was tough last start. While I would prefer over the extra trip with the soft conditions this may feel more like an 1800M event than a 1650M event. Handles this track and loves the sting out of the ground and being well into his prep fitness shouldn’t be a problem.
It’s a pretty tough way to round out the day with Maxcalemma drawn out and Not a Choice not being an expert on in these conditions it’s a tough assignment. Happy to be playing the fields for quaddies here and for that reason will be sitting out. Good luck mugs!
