Eight races at The Mug's number one track in Queensland, the home of racing, yes you know where we mean, Doomben. With the rail out six metres and Soft 5 conditions expected, they might even run on.
Two-year-old maidens are a mug speciality and this event is no different. A small field is engaged but they're even across the board. We have settled on Gypsy Isle here for the fit as a fiddle Les Ross stable who have two in this event. It has the best form coming through the Saturday two-year-old handicap where a few of these went down to I’ve Bean There. It will be on pace and if the two leaders take each other on, she can settle perfectly in behind.
The fillies and mares do battle in the second and I have landed on one coming to town in Haz De Bee for Shane and Adam Barling. Her best form is over this trip and will handle the soft conditions as well as being right on the pace in behind She’s At Regatta which just appears under the odds off just the one appearance.
In the third event we strike another maiden and while the Tony Gollan-trained gelding looks the one to beat, it’s a pass race for us from the wide draw.
Kipchoge comes up in the fourth even and finally from the draw should be able to hunt across and dictate with Profiterole. He is the class in this race so he should be breaking through.
The fifth is tough with one of our horses of the future in Stuck With You lining up against Bering Sea who is a quality galloper for David Vandyke. We have sided with the latter as we really don’t like backing horses back in trip and we think Stuck With You should be chasing 2000M races later in the prep. Bering Sea to hold off the fast finishing Stuck With You here.
Vandyke has his own stable clash of the titans in the next with a bit of Gollan and Edmonds spice to add to the contest. Amiche takes on Skins here and you wouldn’t be leaving out Say Haya or Grand Zou who have been in some form of late. We have settled on Skins. With the pace battle up front, this will be a war of attrition and Skins should be able to let it all unfold in front and will close over the top late.
Shamrock Lu appears to be the only real pace influence in the seventh and with Jim Byrne on board, he could be able to dictate this one. The Gollan-trained gelding should lead on his own, he handles the soft conditions and with a first-up run under the belt, he should be hard to hold out at an each-way price.
We end the day with another great bet and that is the classy Clearance Sale for the Bryan and Daniel Guy yard with red hot Rodd on board. He looks to get the favours from the draw and should get the run of the race from the inside lanes or round them up down the outside if needed. Two trials should have him wound up and ready to win this first up assignment.
