The sun is shining, the track is drying, the wallets are open, it sounds like another wonderful day at Queensland's premier racing track, The Sunshine Coast... Oh shit, how do we edit this? Eagle Farm, that's what we meant to type.
A handy eight race card presents itself today and with a few smart one's going around the Mugs are confident in a fill up!
With the rail out 7.5 and the track expected to be in Good 4 range and improving, it'll shape for an even day's racing on paper, but with Eagle Farm we know that's not always (never) the case!
Let's look at Race 1, well The BRC told the Mugs "Hey Mugs, we want you to get off to a flyer, so we'll put on a Class 4 over the 1400m and only have 5 runners in it to make things easier for you", we responded with a simple "Sit down, we'll take Brisbane Racing from here" and we've found some value with Firebox here in the first. Back up to 1400m is a big tick for this horse, who never really found his footing after a 4 week freshen up last start, 4L beaten coming home on Clearance Sale reads well here and with only 5 runners her he can sit a lot more forward that what unfolded last start. Man of Sinn wants further and Spirit Esprit just wants a soft track.
Race 2 we certainly have an interesting runner, a $2.3million dollar colt making his debut for a little small town trainer named Tony Gollan, Setanta. Racing in the Aquis blue punters have launched early and with a last start 6th in Group 2 company the drop in class SHOULD be ideal. Buuuuut, if you know that Mugs, you know we don't take the obvious! Gaelic is another horse that seems to have a lot 'potential'. Moved on from Gai to Ballina trainer Kim Loy, the lightly raced 4YO has had the 1 win from 4 starts and has gone under as favourite multiple times. With Waterhouse horse's we know they'll have the freshness in the legs to find a handy position in running and think he'll be primed for a first up attack. We're happy to take on Setanta here, as there'll be bigger fish to fry down the line for the hype horse.
Reality sinks in here... That was nice wasn't it. It's redemption day for the son of Shooting to Win, beaten favourite behind some handy horses last prep such as Boomnova and I Am Thirty, he should be primed to break the duck eggs today at start number three,
Race 4 we have two last winners top the market in Sweet Snitty and Centrefire. Both coming out of BM72's, both show plenty of early speed, the difference? Senior jockey versus apprentice jockey. We've lent Centrefire's way here, Bobby The Fish goes aboard and caught everyone off guard knocking off the well fancied East Asia who we're excited to see again for the Mugbook. 1200m, Eagle Farm, Big YES.
Well, we've just jagged the early quaddie so we're going to head to the bar. Race 5 the maidens go around in an intense battle over the mile and that's all they'll do for the Mugs. Rations is crying out for a break through and today looks to be the day but when Chris Waller brings them to town you've got to take notice and that's what we'll be doing with Volunteer.
Ok, beer o'clock is over, punt o'clock is back on and they're back with the 3YO's over 1200m. Our eyes lit up when we saw Georgie's Pride back at the races here, BUT, (there's always a but) the last start was impressive but out of that race we've had Back 'Tom Melbourne' When get beaten again and Moonan Me is coming out of a 5 horse field win at Royal Tipswich. The form that's stacked up is the Sakura Star/Ourconi form and with Ourconi getting a 1.5KG swing since there last meeting further strengthens the case for Sir Bobby Fradd to take this 3YO's record to 3 wins from 9 starts.
There's an absolute RIPPA bet here in Race 7, and it's for Mr TJ Gollan again, Foxy Rippa. Last 2 starts has run into a smart horse named Toorooloo. Really found the line well at the 1050m last start and will love the step up to 1200m, dissecting the form her best runs have come on a good surface on the wide open spaces of the Sunshine Coast and think she'll get much the same today. A great each way play.
We come to the 'Get Out Stakes' and I'm afraid to say it Mugs, but we'll have to hunt something at Happy Valley later tonight. Highmaster make his QLD debut after some solid runs in NSW, Racing Paradise is on the quick back up and the dream team of DIttman/Waller have a lay here in the race, but it's an early finish for the Mugs.
