After cracking Group One action at Randwick over the weekend, we head to yet another example of pristine racetracks in Australia - Ipswich! We are facing Soft 5 conditions here with the rail in the 9 metre position and boy, early on they will be flying! We will be taking a pass in the first two 800M rocket races with leaders playing a key role; with only four runners in the first and a few unraced in the second we will be looking further on down the card.
In the third we come up against another three year old maiden and wow these races are hard. Biz Class has the best form but last prep had three trials leading in so may be vulnerable here. We are placing a bit of faith here in the flying Rex Lipp stable and the in form Steph Thornton aboard Strut. Draws wide but rail out could offset a bit of that. Happy to play at the odds here.
We are going the short way home in the fourth with Ready to Chase for the Forster stable. He should be leading here relatively uncontested and from barrier six if this gelding has the early toe to kick away Du Plessis should have no problem steering him home.
In the fifth event we are going to the black book for a runner that Michael Nolan is bringing to town. Crayon comes to this off a pretty tough run first up about three wide and battled on well to hold on for 5th going down by 1.5 lengths. Will be fitter for the run and be able to track in behind the pace BUT the best news of all is red hot Rodd steers; massive tick.
Another 800M specialty of the card comes in Race 6 and for this reason we have to steer clear of the favourite Superare. These races are just a dash and Tru Blu Tango draws inside, has the pace to lead them off and comes to this off two trials so will be fitter than expected first up.
We have a distance race for the seventh event of the day and Fast Train seems to be a bit of value with the inside draw and proven track and trip big positives. Sometimes punting is as simple as just backing the top weight and watching class prevail. This is that time!
I am taking a pass in the eighth with a big watch on Dad’s Lad that we did tip in a previous mid-week Toowoomba card, so we are moving on to the final event - a Benchmark 65. We have sided with last start winner here in Legal Counsel and we have one of the best and sharpest apprentices in QLD with KWT. It was a great win last run at the Sunshine Coast because he was kept much closer and while he draws wide here with the rail out it should give KWT a chance to sit off them and come around them late.
