An eight race card has been assembled for the Sugar City that is Mackay this afternoon. Soft 7 is what we’ll be racing on, with the rail true.
It’s an average BM65 over the 1800m course to kick off, but I thought Lefkas Island has shown enough in her last couple to be competitive here. She won over 2000m two back at this track, before running an unlucky second to Borella at Townsville over the 1900m journey last time out. She shouldn’t be too far away in the run from gate eight and can go close to winning.
It scares me to even consider having a bet in the second with a bunch of noted non-winners so we’ll move on.
There’s another pretty weak maiden, but we thought Wayne Pomfrett’s Cheyenne Beach has shown some potential, with form around Avocado Sunset and Bustedup, before a fast finishing third at Bowen last time out. Up to the 1200m will suit, drawn well in gate three and Marnu Potgieter’s 1.5kg claim gets him in well. Happy to be on at the $5.
A small field of five has been assembled in the fourth, with noted cat Bering Sea topping the market, alongside Heyington. The 1560m will be right up Heyington’s alley, and he is simply more genuine than the ex-Vandyke gelding. Not overly keen to bet, but Heyington should be winning.
Race 5 – PASS.
As we approach the North Queensland Carnival, one runner that can stack up in some nice races is Trinity Bannon’s Overseas. The 3YO son of Ocean Park is looking to make it three straight wins, and he drops 5kg off his last victory, albeit up in grade. Bannon’s gelding is yet to breakthrough at Mackay, but the 1300m is his pet trip and he has drawn the pole so I’m confident that he will be winning again.
I think we can take an early mark today, Overseas’ race will be over by 3:20pm, tell the kids you’ll be late to pick them up from school and enjoy the rest of the arvo!
Mugs Out.
