Eat your heart out PVL and stick your 10 race cards at Randwick, 12 of the best out of the Beef Capital is what we strive for here in Queensland. As the great man Michael Charge would say, warm and balmy conditions* are in order at Rocky today.
Early start today, with the first at 10:27am. Bliss.
*I have no idea if it is in fact, walm and balmy.
Race 1: BM65 (1828m)
I have been with Class Of Royalty in his past couple and each time I've told myself I've gone off one too early. Today is the day. He's rock-hard fit now, gets to 1828m and on to a drier track which should suit. He can get the gun run and be hard to beat.
Race 2: 2YO Maiden Hcp (1100m)
Graeme Green and Les Tilley have one of the best combinations in CQ, and they combine here with Astra Star who was very good first-up chasing Sun Worshipper. He won't be too far away today second-up, staying at the 1100m. He can go one better today.
Race 3: 3YO Maiden (1050m)
Although only having had the one career start, Cherry Rose's form is superior. She was very good on debut over 1200m here back in the spring, putting a big gap on the third horse that day. She comes here well educated, with two good trials, including one behind Hell who was ultra impressive first-up. She should land in the first three or four under Justin Stanley and be too strong late over 1050m.
Race 4: Open Handicap (1500m)
Small field, open race - no bet here.
Race 5: Maiden Handicap (1200m)
I'm not having a bet here, but giving a big #GoWarwick for Spirit Of Heath for our man George Carpenter's first runner as a trainer. Hopefully the Milton Markets mock doesn't stop it.
Race 6: 2024 Mayors Cup (1200m)
Master Jamie, duh. Weight stops trains apparently, but MJ is bigger, faster and stronger than trains. Godspeed. Even with 67.5kg on his back, he still might be too good for this lot.
Race 7: BM70 Hcp (1300m)
Awol is unbeaten at Rocky from two attempts and I think that will continue here. He looked a touch vulnerable last start when fresh off a setback, but now just three weeks between runs with a tickover barrier trial, he should be screwed right down and ready to go on with it.
Race 8: Capricornia Yearling Sales 2YO Classic (1200m)
This race was meant to be run a fortnight ago, but it was washed out, so a lot of these 2YOs could be left wanting at the end of six furlongs. One that won't be is the Matt Kropp-trained Propose at big odds, who was luckless on debut at Toowoomba over 1100m. The 1200m will really suit this daughter of Rothesay, as will the big track here at Rocky.
Race 9: Capricornia Yearling Sales 3&4YO Classic (1300m)
Ringers Reward brings the best form to this race from South-East Queensland around the likes of Fortuneer, Party For Two & Metalart, and I am confident that will go a long way in a race like this. Given her form through the summer, she is no doubt destined for bigger things this winter, so if she can bring her A-game, she will be hard to hold out.
Race 10: Class 1 Hcp (1200m)
Give 'em Hell.
Race 11: Benchmark 65 Handicap (1050m)
Doubting Eye has been airborne this prep, winning four from five and only going down by less than a length at his other start. He does need to take on the older horses here, including dual Group 1-placed Mamaragan (LOL), but with the form he is in, he should be too slick.
Race 12: 0-55 Handicap (1400m)
I'm not going to be betting into the race, I'll just be hoping that Cherry Rose & Hell both win for the sake of my multi, and then riding Hangin' Around as the last leg. He was great on debut here and then even better last start at Mackay when winning from go to woah. Drawn kindly, it'll be all over bar the shouting very early I'd suggest.
