What a midweek day we have. The champ Zaaki goes to Doomben on Saturday to contest the Cup as a red hot favourite. We are running on the synthetic track up at the Sunshine Coast today with the rain still lingering around, where rail is in the true position for the entire course with the first race to jump at 11:55am AEST.
Race 1: MAIDEN (1600M)
This is a really tough race and with no experience on the synthetic track it's simply a no bet race for me.
Race 2: Benchmark 78 (2150M)
A small field here but there are only really two chances in Casino Mondial and Street Dancer. I am siding with Street Dancer here who has been running well with the odd win and will go forward from the gate. He should take it up and be hard to catch here reaching peak fitness.
Race 3: Handicap (1100M)
I am keen on one here from the Nolan yard. Glamborgini had the right race to win last start and just couldn’t so not sure what to do there. The other favourite will get back in the field, so if the last start by Northern Express is anything to go by, he will be off and gone. Assuming that he handles the synthetic surface, this gelding should be too strong over the 1100M after a last start three-length win.
Race 4: MAIDEN (1400M)
Another maiden here and as expected the market has trended towards the Maloney/Vandyke combination but with the conditions and synthetic surface here happy to give it a miss. The $2.30 does seem under the odds in a big competitive event.
Race 5: Handicap (2150M)
Well the market here has trended straight towards the Waller runner but our trainer in Will Hulbert has Kipling’s Journey here who comes out of the Group 2 Queensland Guineas where he was only five lengths off them. Should go very close as the form out of that race was franked on the weekend with Dark Destroyer winning. The $6.50 on offer looks a spoil in this race.
Race 6: Handicap (1400M)
This is another impossible race with the kiwi visitor lining up amongst some other last start winners on the synthetic surface could be an interesting race. Pocket Full should lead them off and if not taken on then will be very hard to run down. This could be a great race leading into the carnival, will we see them show up in a few weeks.
Race 7: Class 5 Handicap (1400M)
This race is the race of non winners, I mean I like Avowal but seriously this race is an absolute lottery.
Race 8: Benchmark 70 (1600M)
Tony Pike brings another one up here but I think a local will get the run of the race here. Vitesse Francais likes to be on pace and from the draw should be able to settle just off Hostage of War. He has a high cruising speed and with a super record over this trip and the previous experience on the poly I think he will be hard to hold out.
Race 9: Benchmark 78 (1100M)
Finally we finish the day with a hot pot who I am pretty keen on. Better Get Set was a last start third behind Boomnova and that form has been significantly franked with a win on the weekend. She is short but with that classy form looking good on the weekend and drawing the inside barrier to do no work, we have to stick with the her here.
