Eight of the best will face the starter at Townsville this afternoon on a Soft 5 track with the rail out 4m from the 1000 to the Winning Post and 3.5m the remainder. As the carnival starts to take shape, there are some nice races throughout the day. Lets get into it.
We will skip the first race; it is full of non-winners and the market has not given much of a guide either, so it is easy to ignore.
***MUGS RUNNER ALERT***
Race 2, the feature - the time honoured Carlton & United Breweries QTIS 3YO Handicap - and down the bottom of the market is our girl 'Connie' Cool Intelligence. She pulled up a touch sore after her last start at this this track over the 1400m, but is said to be going well since. The small field makes her at LEAST a top six chance. Go you good thing. Cleaver Greene the deserving favourite and clear danger.
The top two in the market in race three look to be the two winning chances, and it wouldn't be a day at Mugsville without at Wiggo winner, so that's where we are going. Irrupt was a fast finisher (hehe) when fourth at Rocky two weeks ago over the 1100m, so 1200m is bound to suit and this is easier. Drawn 7 for Wiggo and Wehlow, he'll get a good run and be finishing over the top of a tiring Fire King.
If we are completely honest, nothing really takes our fancy in the next four races, so do whatever you've gotta do and be ready to hook in for the last at 5:07pm. Best Hoffa won the Mackay Cup last year in dominant fashion and only just missed in the Cairns Cup two runs later when second to Paniagua which is top notch form. He comes off a big win last start over the 1800m at Mackay, and although he drops back to 1400m and has to carry 60kg for Marnu Potgieter, he is one classy conveyance. He won by 4.5L three starts back at this track and trip with 61kg, so there is no reason why he cannot do it again.
Happy punting Mugs!
